Past Commoners' Days 1980-96
The earliest pictures on this page date to 1980. The first four shown here for that year were kindly supplied by Mrs. Barbara Henry; the other two come mostly from an album kindly donated to Effingham Parish Council by its former chairman Mrs. Jessica E. (née Harrold) Page.

1981 : September 19th
Adrian Estler standing in cart pulled by his horse "William" or "Bill"
The above horse "William" or "Bill" is still remembered by many current residents. He was named after an earlier horse "William" who had featured prominently in the legal proceedings concerning Adrian Estler and the Common in the late 1950s. That horse, a grey, had – according to a report of the case by The Times in 1959 – been acquired by Estler in 1948 when it was about 8 years old. Sadly, its impounding during this period resulted in its death soon afterwards. The second William, seen in these photos, lived until 1994.
